Augustus John English


Augustus John English was born 26th September 1851, and entered the army as a Sub-Lieutenant, I4th (King's) Hussars, 30 Dec 1871. He became Lieutenant, 30 Dec 1873. He was appointed extra ADC to the Governor of Madras on 12 June 1877 until November 1878, and again from January to May 1881; and ADC from 2 June 1879 to 22 Nov 1880. In 1881 he was present with the Fourteenth in the Transvaal campaign in South Africa. He was promoted to captain 16 Jan 1884, Major 17 Aug 1887, and Lieutenant-Colonel CO on 1 July 1896. He retained the command of the Fourteenth till 21 Feb 1899, when he was placed on retired pay after twenty-seven years' service. During his command of the regiment he served at Cahir and Newbridge.
