Trumpet Major and Band Corporal c1874

The group photo from which this detail is taken was posed for at Aldershot c1874 and shows 31 bandsmen and the bandmaster (and dog) holding different wind instruments. They are all in stable dress with pill-box caps which are blue with a yellow cap-band. The corporal has this order of dress, his stable jacket being of band pattern, edged all around with yellow instead of having buttons down the front like the rank and file of the regiment. His cuffs are obscured but they have a trefoil design. His gold stripes have an embroidered regimental NCO arm badge, as does the man behind him, the Trumpet Major who is of warrant officer status and wears a stable jacket befitting his rank, decorated with gold edging and gold lace on the collar and cuff. He also has olivet buttons as worn by officers. But his and the corporal's jackets are fastened with hooks and eyes. His rank and appointment are denoted by the badges (partly obscured by the bandmaster's baton) on his right sleeve; four chevrons with regimental hawk badge, crossed trumpets and a crown. His pill-box cap has a wide gold cap-band. He and the band sergeant and the bandmaster are the only ones in the group with gold banded caps. They have white leather pouch belts on their shoulder but do not have the black leather ammunition pouches on their backs; instead they have large white band pouches which hold sheet music.
