Charles Falkiner Morton


Charles Falkiner Morton was born on 7 Nov 1843 in Calcutta where his father worked as a barrister. He was educated at Eton and joined the army as a cornet in the 1st Royal Dragoons on 18th Feb 1862. He served with them in Britain and Ireland until 1882 when, with the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel he exchanged with Lieut-Col Francis Shirley Russell into the 14th Hussars. He joined the regiment at Secunderabad and took over command on the death of Colonel Knox in 1885. He brought the regiment home and retired on 30 June 1887, but his services were retained to command a detachment of the 14th that took part in the Queen's Jubilee Review at Aldershot on 9 July 1887. Afterwards he was Assistant Inspector of Remounts in London from Oct 1887 until 19 Oct 1892. He was put on retired pay on 7 Nov 1900 after 38 years in the cavalry.
