The Hon Hugh Edward Joicey DSO


The Honourable Hugh Edward Joicey was born on 21 Sep 1881, the son of James, 1st Baron Joicey. He was educated at Harrow and joined the 14th Hussars as a second lieutenant in 1899, sailing out with the regiment to South Africa to fight in the Boer War. In March 1910 he was seconded as adjutant in the Imperial Yeomanry

In World War One he was put in command of the 1st Battalion, Suffolk Regiment when Lt-Col Sinclair Thompson was wounded in an attack on the Hohenzollern Redoubt. Joicey served in this post from 15 Oct 1915 to 11 Nov 1918 and commanded the battalion in Macedonia. He won the DSO and was also gazetted on 7 Oct 1919 for his award of the Greek Military Cross. As well as these decorations he was mentioned in despatches 4 times. In 1919 he was briefly CO of the 14th Hussars.

Hugh Edward Joicey was a JP and he held the office of High Sheriff of Northumberland in 1933. He became Lord Joicey when he succeeded to the title of 3rd Baronet Joicey on 24 July 1940 on the death of his elder brother. He was chairman of Lambton Hetton and Joicey Colliers between 1940 and 1966, and was chairman of Albyn Line, Tanfield Steamship Company. On 19 July 1921 he married Lady Joan Lambton daughter of the 4th Earl of Durham. They had two sons, David who was killed in 1943 and Michael who died in 1993. Lord Joicey died on 14 Oct 1966.
