James Dennis


James Dennis was born 13 Aug 1838 and joined the 5th Dragoon Guards on 5 Mar 1861. He transferred to the 5th Lancers on 24 Mar 1863, being adjutant from 1869 to 1871, and then as a captain transferred again to the 3rd Dragoon Guards on 10 June 1874. He exchanged to the 14th Hussars on 31 Oct 1874 and was promoted to major in 1881 whilst the regiment were in South Africa. He reached Lieutenant-Colonel on 25 Oct 1885 and was second lieutenant-colonel under Lt-Col C F Morton. On 17 Nov 1886 he exchanged into the 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers) with Lt-Col H B Hamilton who came to command the 14th. James Dennis commanded the Carabiniers from 1887 to 1891. He then went on retired pay after 30 years in the cavalry.
