Sir William Russell Bt CB


William Russell was born in 1822, the eldest son of the first baronet, also called Sir William. He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1839 and joined the 7th Hussars on 2 July 1841. He was ADC to the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1847 to 1852 and again in 1854. He was Master of the Horse in Ireland from 1847-52. He served on the staff in the Crimea and reached the rank of Lieutenant-colonel on 12 Nov 1858. He was active with the 7th Hussars throughout the Indian Mutiny, commanding his regiment at Barree and Sirsee, and many other battles. For some time he commanded a brigade of cavalry in India. He exchanged with Arthur Scudamore into the 14th Hussars on 8 Oct 1861 commanding them until Nov 1864, having been promoted to Colonel on 20 July 1863. He was a major-general in Dec 1868 and retired with the honorary rank of lieutenant-general in 1881. He was also MP for Dover from 1857 to 59 and Norwich from 1860 to 1874. He died in 1892.
