Advance from Shumran

There is plenty of detail in this sketch by Private Baggott. It is titled Gun Boats & Cavalry at Shumran Bend, and dated Feb 24 1917. The 14th Hussars officers of RHQ are mounted in the foreground with Colonel Hewitt on a grey horse. A private holds a guidon flag which is not explained. A motorcycle courier arrives with a message while armoured cars make their way through the ruined village and S Battery RHA go into action in the middle distance. There are three British gun boats on the river, Tarantula, Mantis and Moth, firing at retreating Turks as a Turkish boat flees up-river.
