John Cunningham, Earl of Glencairn


The portrait of John Cunningham, 15th Earl of Glencairn was attributed to George Romney and painted c1778.' The Earl was born in 1749 and joined the 14th Dragoons as a cornet in 1774.' He was a captain in 1777 and had left the regiment by 1780. He afterwards took orders in the Church of England. In 1785 he married Isabel Erskine, daughter of the 10th Earl of Buchan who was a widow. He died at Coats House, Edinburgh on 24 Sep 1796 aged 47, and is buried in St Cuthbert's Churchyard, Edinburgh. The buttoned up coat is scarlet with yellow facings and silver epaulettes and buttons.'
