George Augustus Eliott, 1st Lord Heathfield



Eliott is most famous for commanding the British Forces on Gibraltar against a Spanish and French besieging army which lasted three and a half years. The painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds in 1787 shows Lord Heathfield with the key of Gibraltar. He commanded the 2nd Troop of Horse Grenadier Guards before raising the 15th Light Dragoons.

1759 Promoted to Major-General
1763 Took part in Expedition to Cuba. 2nd-in-charge at capture of Havana
1765 Promoted to Lieutenant-General
1772 Wife died
1774-5 Commander-in-Chief in Ireland
1775 (6th Mar) Became a Privy Councillor
1777 (25th May) Appointed Governor of Gibraltar
1778 Promoted to General
1779-83 Siege of Gibraltar
1783 (23rd April) Awarded Knight of the Bath
1787 (6th July) Created Lord Heathfield, Baron Heathfield of Gibraltar
1790 (6th July) Died at Schloss Kalkofen in Aachen.
