Sabretache 1818 - 1828

One way to date a sabretache is by the battle honours. The honours displayed here, are PENINSULA, EMSDORF, VILLIERS-EN-COUCHE and WATERLOO. The exact date when the battle honour VILLIERS-EN-COUCHE was granted is not known, but the first appearance in the Army Lists of that honour is 1818. This fine sabretache has the honour WATERLOO which puts it after 1815. The cypher is a reverse George III type. He died in 1820, but in many cases the same cypher was used for his son George IV.

The lace round the edge is gold, replacing the former silver lace. The pattern is called Austrian Wave because it was used on the uniforms of Austrian officers. It is a tribute to the hussars who accompanied the 15th in their battle at Villiers-en-Couche. This style of sabretache was worn by officers until 1828, when the honour was granted for Egmont-op-Zee.
