John Samuel Mason King

John King was born on April 2nd 1884 in Hull in Yorkshire. He joined the army in his home town in 1905 as a horsekeeper in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. Although he spent most of his army career in the Veterinary Corps in India and Western Europe, his chosen career path meant that he spent a lot of his time working together with the Cavalry in general and the 17th Lancers in particular. Indeed, he was actually attached to the regiment and served with them as a Lance Corporal during The Great War along the North West Frontier in India before returning to France. Not unusually, he left the service soon after the end of the war, being fully discharged in June 1919. He survived the entire conflict from beginning to end rising to the rank of Sergeant by its conclusion. There is a colour picture of John King in the same uniform here.
