5th Dragoon Guards

Inkerman Badge

Some of the star badges of the 5th Dragoon Guards have this 16 pointed design with 7 battle honours radiating out of the centre. Clockwise from the crown are: SALAMANCA SEBASTOPOL TOULOUSE INKERMAN VITTORIA BALAKLAVA and PENINSULA. 'The puzzling thing is that the regiment was not awarded a battle honour for Inkerman. 'The only honours they received for the Crimean War were Balaklava and Sebastopol. 'Up until 1882 the regiment had 6 battle honours. 'In that year they were retrospectively awarded the 4 honours for the Marlborough campaign. 'The award for Beaumont (1794) was conferred in 1909. 'None of the heavy cavalry regiments took part in the battle of Inkerman and none of them were awarded that honour.

This particular badge appeared in the Spink Militaria catalogue of 27th July 2000. It was part of Lot 48 along with other Dragoon guard items of horse furniture. 'There were two badges for the 5th DG described: '..and two brass stars, possibly breastplate-badges, with QVC and devices and battle-honours of the 5th Dragoon Guards (one lacking its fixing-posts).' 'The auctioneers assumed them to be from the front of the martingale worn on the breast of the horse. 'This badge could also be from a sabretache but it is described as being brass. 'The officers generally wore gilt ornaments, and the earlier sabretache badge was gilt and silver.'
