5th Dragoon Guards

Band c1897

Although the exact date of this photo is not known, it was taken in India between 1893 and 1899. They wear dress tunics with green velvet facings and yellow cord aiguillettes. There are two officers in frock coats seated either side of the drums, and the band sergeant sits on the left of the photo. The large drum in the middle is the time-beater's instrument which could only be carried on dismounted parades. Another photo shows all the other instruments being played by the band on horseback. In that case they all wear a white tropical helmet.
