5th Dragoon Guards

Troop Sergeant D G Harris

Sergeant Harris was the senior NCO in the patrol led by 2nd Lt John Norwood VC that came under fire from the Boers on 30th Oct 1899. Norwood went to the aid of an injured private and was helped by Private Sibthorpe. Sergeant Harris, having got the rest of the Troop under cover, also went back to assist the two men who were carrying the injured man under heavy fire. It was the testimony of Sibthorpe and Harris that brought about the award of the VC to John Norwood because the officer himself was too modest to report his own part in the action. The photo of Troop Sergeant Harris was taken at Dublin in 1909.
