5th Dragoon Guards

Pouchbelt and Pouches c1848

These Victorian pouches are of the same basic 5th DG design but have a markedly different appearance. The top pouch would seem to be earlier because of the circular rings that attach it to the belt, a method employed in the early years of the 19th century. The more square pouch has elongated rings which allow the belt to be attached without folding or cutting the ends of the belt. The belt itself is decorated with gold lace of the French check design used on the dress sabretache. This style of belt and pouch were discontinued when the uniform changes were made in 1855.
