Standards were carried by a Warrant Officer or senior NCO following an order issued in 1796. In 1822 it was stipulated that the carrier must be a Troop Sergeant-Major. When Troops were replaced by Squadrons as the sub-unit the Squadron Sergeant-Major became the carrier. From 1858 it was ordered that each regiment should carry only one standard of crimson colour. At the same time the head of the staff, or spear, was to have a Royal Crest instead of the spear-head. |
