Bandmaster c1881

Bandmasters and RSMs were given warrant officer status in 1881. The mess dress reflects this mid-way status since it looks almost like an officer's uniform but lacks the ornate braiding on the waistcoat and any sign of rank badges, on the collar or the shoulder. The open top to the waistcoat showing a shirt and tie is an unusual feature of mess dress at this period. The identity of this bandmaster is not known for sure but it is thought to be Charles Poole who was appointed Sergeant Bandmaster of the 7th DG in 1874, becoming a warrant officer 1st class on 1st July 1881 and retiring in February 1883.
