Block Drift

The Lieutenant-Governor, Colonel John Hare is mounted in the middle of the gathering and an interpreter talks with Chief Sandile and his group. Behind Hare are six mounted men who are indistinct. The 7th Dragoon Guards are lined up in two ranks with red shell jackets and peakless forage caps. The artillery are nearest us, and beyond the Dragoon Guards are the Cape Mounted Rifles, and then the 91st Foot in red shell jackets and white trousers. The Xhosa are grouped behind the chief and extend all the way up to the top of the hill. Many of them are mounted and carry several asegai spears. The chief and his sub-chiefs wore leopard-skins and crane feathers on each side of their head.
