Gwanga River

This Ackerman print shows the action at Gwanga River quite accurately. Darrell's Troop are charging into the mass of Xhosas while the green jacketed Cape Riflemen fire on the retreating tribesmen. A scene on the left of the picture shows the wounded Corporal Martin being tended by riflemen. He later died. Colonel Somerset's report praised Captain Sir Harry Darrell's 'brilliant charge into the middle of the enemy's column' and mentions that there was another Troop of 7th DG under Captain William Hogg that performed a useful flanking diversion, resulting in the capture of horses and the killing of some Xhosas. The figure in the middle, with a telescope is Colonel Somerset.
