General Philip Honywood


Honywood was the nephew of Sir Philip Honywood who commanded the cavalry at Dettingen. The younger Philip served at Dettingen in the 3rd Dragoon Guards, being severely wounded, and fought throughout the War of the Austrian Succession. In 1755 he was appointed Colonel of the 20th Foot and in 1756 Colonel of the 9th Dragoons. He was wounded 28 times in his military career, and retired in 1746 to live on his estate at Marks Hall. He was a tall man, 6'3". The painting, completed in 1765, is by Gainsborough and is the only one he painted of an officer mounted on his horse. He was Colonel of the 7th Dragoon Guards from April 1759 to June 1782, a period of 23 years. Following that he served as Colonel of the 3rd Dragoon Guards from 1782 until his death in 1785.
