Pouch c1880

The silver flap pouch replaced the embroidered pouch in 1855 with the change of uniform from the coatee to the tunic. At first the pouch flap was decorated with a gilt VR cypher and crown but from circa 1880 the regiment adopted the PRDG cypher and coronet on their black leather sabretaches and it may well be that the pouches changed at that time also. This example is from a Spink catalogue of March 1996 which states that the silver is hallmarked Birmingham 1907. Another similar example is hallmarked Birmingham 1896. The box itself is curved to follow the shape of the wearer's back, and covered in black leather. The pouchbelt was also of black leather and covered in gold lace in the S and vellum pattern. The buckle tip and slide were in gilt with a smooth surface.
