Squadron Standard 1839

In 1796 it was declared in a Warrant that cavalry Standards should be carried by an NCO rather than a junior officer (Cornet). In 1822 it was specified that the carriers had to be Troop Sergeant-Majors. This illustration was used as the frontispiece of Cannon's Regimental history of the 7th DG and shows a TSM, with 4 stripes, carrying a Squadron or Troop Standard.

There is some doubt that this black Standard is accurate. We know that the 7th used Guidons for the squadrons other than the First Squadron, which had the crimson Sovereign's Standard. Although the Guidons were officially discontinued in 1837 it is not certain that the order would have come into effect immediately or even very soon afterwards.

According to P W Reynolds, the original drawing for this illustration, which was made by William Heath, showed the facings as blue and the Standard left blank. So it was doubtful whether it was meant to be for the 7th DG at all.
