Captain R A Vansittart DL JP


Robert Arnold Vansittart was born on 21st Oct 1851 and lived at Foots Cray Place, a Palladian style mansion, in Kent. He was attached to the Lanarkshire Yeomanry until 1st Oct 1886, and then served with the 7th Dragoon Guards in the Boer War. In later life he was the recruiting officer for the Ministry of National Service. He was invested by the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) and awarded the MBE. He died at the age of 76 on 8th Jan 1928 and was buried at St James's Church, North Cray.

He had 3 sons and 3 daughters including the famous, Robert Gilbert Vansittart who was born in 1881 and became a senior diplomat and private secretary to the Prime Minister from 1928-30. He was very critical of Germany, warning of German aggression between the wars and advocated the total re-education of the German people. He was also a poet and playwright and became Lord Vansittart of Bexley. The other sons were Arnold Bexley Vansittart and Guy Nicholas Vasittart.
