7th Hussars

Trumpeter c1880

This detail from a painting by Norie shows a mounted trumpeter of the 7th Hussars holding the reins of an officer's horse. The red and yellow cords for the trumpet slung on his back, and the bugle held in his left hand, are in agreement with the 1857 sketch by Ebsworth. He has buff leather gloves and his pouch-belt is not as white as is usually seen on parade. The placing of the figures suggests that it is a field day. The black sabretache on two white slings is prominent here, and there is an interesting aspect to his boots which seem to have a yellow or gold boss on the front as does the officer.
