Trumpeters, c1898

The hand colouring of this old postcard is accurate. The mounted bugler is in dress uniform but has an ammunition bandolier instead of a pouch-belt. This does not necessarily mean that he is dressed for a field day. He carries the bugle with coloured cords. The standing figure is wearing an undress frock and a musician's red pillbox cap. He carries a trumpet, which was used for dismounted occasions. He has an embroidered badge on his upper right arm which is crossed trumpets, and regimental collar badges. The mounted figure has no arm badge, and the collar, although there is a confusion of marks on the print, seems to have no collar badges. A coloured postcard published c1903 shows a mounted bugler in review order (wearing collar badges) with the gold and red embroidered badge on his upper right sleeve.
