Private John Pearson VC



Private Pearson was one of four men of the 8th Hussars who earned a Victoria Cross at the battle of Gwalior on 17th June 1858, during the Indian Mutiny. Their squadron charged the enemy camp and batteries, capturing two guns and bringing them back to the British Lines.

Pearson was born in Leacroft, Leeds on 19th January 1825. After he left the army with the rank of sergeant he emigrated to Canada. He died in Ontario on 18th April 1892.
