HRH The Princess Margaret

Princess Margaret the younger sister of Queen Elizabeth II, was born on 21st Aug 1930 and became second in line to the throne in 1936 when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated. She was appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the 15th/19th Hussars on 28th Oct 1958 and visited the regiment quite frequently (9 official visits between 1958 and 1985). When her regiment amalgamated with the 13th/18th she stood down to allow Princess Diana to take the appointment as Col-in-Chief of the Light Dragoons. She took over from Diana in August 1996 when Diana divorced from the Prince of Wales. Margaret held the post until her death on 9th Feb 2002.

The photo was taken on 10th May 1986 when she attended a regimental reunion dinner of the 15th/19th Hussars at Newcastle Civic Centre. On the left of the picture is Brigadier J R D Sharpe CBE, Colonel of the Regiment, and on the right is Colonel Sir Ralph Carr Ellison of the Northumberland Hussars.
