The South Africa Flash

The dark blue and white cloth flash is worn on the upper left arm of all ranks in no.2 dress and on the right sleeve of combat dress as a TRF. It is said to have been worn on the side of the helmets by the 13th Hussars in the South African (Anglo-Boer) War of 1899-1902. This may have developed later in the war but photos taken early in the war show a square badge with the top half as a white rectangle and the lower half blue. The badge as seen here was certainly worn by the 13th Hussars in India from 1904 to 1914 and during the First World War when they fought in Mesopotamia. The badge is always worn with the white half to the front.
