Trooper Christopher Whiteside




Christopher 'Norm' Whiteside was killed in Afghanistan, in an explosion near Gerashk, Helmand on 7th July 2009. He was 20 years old. He was part of Emsdorf Troop operating in the dismounted role as a Fire Support group for A Company 2/Mercian. He was born in Blackpool on 22nd Aug 1988 and joined the army in July 2005 as an infantryman in the Queen's Lancashire Regiment. He was with them for a year but was discharged with an injured knee. He rejoined the army in March 2008 and went into the Light Dragoons. He was single and much missed by his mother Diane and brother Dan. He was a very capable soldier of great promise. The most intense fighting that he experienced lasted for 4 days prior to his death and he proved himself well able to cope.
