Queen's Own Hussars

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother
3rd Nov 1958 - 1st Sep 1993

The Queen Mother was Colonel-in-Chief of the Queen's Own Hussars from beginning to end. When the 7th and 3rd Hussars amalgamated in 1958 she was already the Colonel-in-Chief of the 7th Hussars, while Princess Margaret was the Colonel-in-Chief of the 3rd. The Queen Mother had held that post since 1947. She remained there until the QOH amalgamated with the Queen's Royal Irish Hussars in September 1993, and continued to be Colonel-in-Chief of the new Queen's Royal Hussars until her death in 2002. The photo shows her arriving slightly earlier than expected to visit the regiment c1965. The RSM, in no1 dress, seems slightly amused by her eagerness and the CO and Colonel are running to keep up with her.
