Lieutenant C N Champion de Crespigny


Claude Norman Champion de Crespigny was born on 14 June 1888. He was the 9th child of Sir Claude 9th Bt and Louisa Margaret McKerrall. He had four brothers, all called Claude, one of whom was Claude Raul who commanded the 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards in WW1. Claude Norman married Olive Clara Rose Gordon in Aug 1914 only days before he was killed at Nery on the 1st September.

The Queen's Bays occupied a sugar factory at Nery and were threatened by the enemy when some nearby buildings were seized by them. Lieutenants de Crespigny and V H Misa took 15 men and launched an attack on the Germans to dislodge them. This attack succeeded but Lieut de Crespigny was killed along with four others.
