Other Rank's Helmet 1871-1914

These two photos of the front and back of the 1871 brass helmet worn by other ranks of the 2nd Dragoon Guards show the plain skull with lines of foliated decoration across the front and down the back. These are not just ornamentation, they actually cover the seams where the helmet is put together. The badge at the front also covers a seam. The chin chain had a leather lining for other ranks, but the officers' helmets had velvet. This metal helmet was worn for home service and was not worn in hot climates.
