Captain Herbert W Thompson


Herbert William Thompson was born c1842, the youngest son of John Vincent Thompson. He was educated at Brighton College from 1855 to 59. He was commissioned into the 16th (Bedfordshire) Regiment, but exchanged to the 3rd West India Regiment, then the 14th Foot, then the Queen's Bays. He volunteered for special service in the Ashanti Campaign of 1873-4 and distinguished himself for his intelligence and bravery. Unfortunately the climate was not conducive to good health and he died off the coast of St Vincent, aged 32. The illustration shows him in the uniform of the 2nd Dragoon Guards (Queen's Bays).
