The illustration based on description rather than observation shows a well-formed square with the incursion of the enemy tribesmen taking place in the foreground. The Greys and Royals were in the lower left of the square, with the 4th and 5th Dragoon Guards on their right, the Bays and RHG, then the 1st and 2nd Life Guards in the right-hand corner. The right side of the square, from the bottom, the Sussex Regiment, Royal Marines, Grenadier Guards, Scots Guards. The front face, from the right, the Coldstream Guards, the Royal Artillery, Mounted Infantry. The left side, from the front, Mounted Infantry and the 5th and 16th Lancers.
