Alfred Douglas Miller DSO


Alfred Miller was born on 1 Mar 1864 and commissioned as a lieutenant into the Scots Greys on 7 Feb 1885. He was a captain in 1893 and appointed adjutant from 1896 to 1900. In the Boer War he was chief staff officer to Sir John French, and from 1901 was DAAG in South Africa, and promoted to major on 20 Feb 1902. He was a lieutenant-colonel in command of the Greys from 1907 to 1911. The photo shows him as CO of the Greys in undress uniform, at Tidworth. He reached the rank of brigadier-general, and in the 1919 New Years Honours list he was appointed CBE. He was married to Ella Fletcher in 1899 and they had 5 children, one of whom was Lt-Col Sir John Mansel Miller MC who was Crown Equerry to the Queen for 26 years from 1961. They lived at Shotover House, Wheatley, Oxfordshire. He died on 5 Dec 1933.
