Officer's Bit Boss

The bridles of officers' chargers were decorated with regimental devices. The bit had this badge attached either side. The Scottish motto on the garter is in gilt metal with a gilt Guelphic crown above. This crown was sometimes used for badges in Queen Victoria's reign. After 1902 it was replaced by the King's crown. The centre of the boss has a silver dome with the Thistle. An identical badge was used on a heart-shaped leather breast-piece for the martingale.
