Drummer Booth and Plum Duff 1896

This photo was taken on the same day as a better known photo that was published in The Navy and Army Illustrated 1st May 1896. It show the same horse that appeared in the 1889 photo but now looking much paler. The kettle drums are covered with blue banners which we can identify because of the pointed flame on the grenade badge on the lower corner. Also the scroll inscribed SECOND TO NONE appears pale whereas the later red banner had the motto on a dark blue scroll. The shabraque must also be blue although I have no proof of this. The caption says of Drummer Booth that he had served in the Scots Greys since 1876. His father was a band sergeant in the regiment and his uncle also was a Greys kettle drummer. They both served in the Crimea. Booth's uniform shows that the pouchbelt holds a small flat white pouch on his back. This must be for show only as he would have little need for sheet music like the other musicians.
