Mounted Band, Piershill c1909

The cavalry Barracks at Piershill near Edinburgh was threatened with demolition in 1909 but it was reprieved, and this photo shows the band paraded in dress uniform in the huge barrack square. The drumhorse is Billy, ridden, it seems by Lance-Corporal Vile. The bandmaster is also at the front with gold aiguillettes and gold cord on his tunic. A musician behind him has a large tuba which wraps around his body.
