Trumpet-Major Joe Goffe 1939

Band sergeant Goffe in the 1937 photo had been promoted to trumpet-major when this photo was taken in September 1939. The Greys were stationed in Rehovot, Palestine at that time. Trumpet-Major Goffe wears the khaki service dress that is more associated with World War 1. Battledress was about to make an appearance but the musicians retained the old service dress so that jodhpurs could be worn. The Greys were still a horse-mounted regiment up until 1941.There are rank badges on both sleeves; four inverted chevrons, and the sergeants Eagle badge, then the crossed trumpets, these last two on the right sleeve only. The Greys did not adopt the flat-topped topee but retained the Wolseley helmet for hot climates. He has a red hackle, the distinction of Greys musicians.
