Colonel Charles Murray, 1st Earl of Dunmore


Charles Murray was born in 1660, the son of John, 2nd Earl and 1st Marquis of Atholl. His mother was Lady Amelia Stanley, daughter of the 7th Earl of Derby. He joined the Scots Dragoons in 1681 as their first commanding officer. He was also Master of Horse to Princess Anne and later to Mary of Modena, consort of James II. When Tam Dalzell died he became Colonel of the regiment, on 6 Nov 1685. He was created Earl of Dunmore on 6 Aug 1686, also Viscount Fincastle and Lord Murray of Clair, Moulie and Tillemot. But when William came to the throne he was deprived of all his appointments. His fortunes improved when Queen Anne acceded to the throne and he was made a Privy Councillor on 4 Feb 1703. In 1704 he was on a Parliamentary committee for examining the public accounts. He was a supporter of the Union of Scotland and England and in 1707 was appointed Governor of Blackness Castle. Charles Murray died in 1710. He was married to Catherine, daughter of Richard Watts of Hereford. They had 6 sons and 3 daughters.
