Francis Glennie Farquhar

Francis Farquhar was born in 1839 and educated at Harrow and at Brasenose College, Oxford. He purchased his commission as a cornet on 14 June 1864. The photo shows him as a young cornet in 1865. He further purchased his promotion to lieutenant on 25 Sep 1867 and captain on 2 Aug 1871. The purchase system was abolished in that year so his promotion thereafter was on merit. He reached the rank of major on 1 July 1881 and was lieutenant-colonel on 5 July 1886. He commanded the Greys from that date until 5 July 1888. He was a noted cricketer. He died aged 75 on 17 March 1914. He was buried at Bervie cemetery, Aberdeenshire.
