George Calvert Clarke CB


George Clarke was born on 23 July 1814 and was commissioned into the 89th Regiment on 30 May 1834. He transferred to the Scots Greys as a captain on 28 Mar 1845. He served in the Crimean War as a brevet major, fighting in the battles of Balaclava, Inkerman and Tchernaia. He was made lieutenant-colonel without purchase on 31 Mar 1866, commanding the Greys until he retired on half pay on 3 Feb 1869, as a major-general. He was appointed CB in 1873, promoted to lieutenant-general on 1 Oct 1877 and general on 1 July 1881. He was made Colonel of the 6th Dragoon Guards on 4 Oct 1880 and transferred to the Scots Greys on 23 Sep 1891. He died at Church House, Uckfield on 9 February 1900.
