RSM George Duncan

This photo of Regimental Sergeant Major George Duncan was published on page 95 of The Navy and Army Illustrated 31 Jan 1896. He has a small medal, probably awarded to him by Tzar Nicholas II in 1895. He went to St Petersburg with Lieutenant-Colonel Welby and other officers (Major Hippisley and Captain Scobell) as a deputation to meet with the Tzar who had been appointed Colonel-in-Chief of the Greys. This meeting took place at Anitchkoff Palace on 2 Feb 1895, and the officers were decorated with the Order of St Stanilov. The decoration worn by RSM Duncan may well be a Russian insignia awarded to soldiers below officer status. Another photo of RSM Duncan can be seen in Uniforms.
