General John Campbell, 4th Duke of Argyll KT


John Campbell was born in 1693 the son of Hon John Campbell of Mamore. He joined the army at an early age and was a lieutenant-colonel by the age of 19. He was a brigadier-general in 1743 in which year he fought with distinction at Dettingen. In 1744 he was a major-general and in 1747, a lieutenant-general. He was appointed Colonel of three regiments during his career; the 39th Foot (1737-38), the 21st Scots Fusiliers (1738-52) and the Scots Greys (1752-1770). He inherited the title 4th Duke of Argyll on the death of his cousin Archibald Campbell. Up until then he had been an MP in the House of Commons: Buteshire (1713-15), Elgin Burghs (1715-22 and 1725-27), Dunbartonshire (1727-1761). He was also Groom of the Bedchamber, Governor of Limerick, Scottish Representative Peer and Privy Councillor. In 1765 he was invested Knight of the Thistle and promoted to General. He was married to Mary Drummond Ker in 1720 and they had a daughter and two sons. He died on 9 Nov 1770 and was buried at Kilmun Parish Church.
