Brigadier-General Lord John Hay


John Hay was born in 1668 the second son of the Marquess of Tweeddale. He joined the Scots Dragoons as a captain in April 1692 and was Lieutenant-Colonel and Captain in command of the regiment from 1 April 1694 to 12 Mar 1697. He was appointed Colonel of the Scots Greys in April 1704 in time for him to lead them in their dismounted assault of the Schellenburg in July 1704. Under him they also distinguished themselves at Ramillies. Lord John Hay died on campaign of a fever that lasted 20 days, at Courtrai on 15 Aug 1706. He was married twice, firstly to Lady Mary Dalzell daughter of the 3rd Earl of Carnwath, and secondly to Elizabeth Orby.
