General John Leslie, 10th Earl of Rothes KT


John Leslie was born in 1698, son of John, 9th Earl of Rothes and Lady Jean Hay. In 1715 he was commissioned into the 9th Dragoons but transferred to the 3rd Foot Guards two years later. He was commanding officer of the 21st Scots Fusiliers in 1721 and inherited the Earldom in 1722. He was a Scottish Representative Peer in 1723. He fought at Dettingen in 1743 and as CO of the Horse Grenadier Guards, at Rocoux in 1744. He was appointed Colonel of the Scots Greys on 18 Jan 1750 which lasted two years, and worked on the military staff in Ireland in 1751 with the rank of lieutenant-general. He was invested Knight of the Thistle in 1753, and appointed Commander-in-Chief in Ireland in 1758. His home was Leslie House in Fife, which was destoyed by fire in 1763. In 1761 his wife died. She was Hannah Howard who he married in 1741, and by whom he had 2 sons and 2 daughters. He remarried, a lady named Mary Lloyd, but the Earl died on 10 Dec 1767.
