Officer's Sabretache 1845-55

After Queen Victoria came to the throne the cypher changed to VR but the basic design remained the same. It is not clear at what date the lace was changed to the Star of St Andrew but at least this concession to the Scottishness of the Greys was granted by the authorities at some point. A print of an officer of the Greys by Richard Dighton published in 1844 shows his belts and sabretache still retaining the Ess and Vellum lace. However, an undated portrait of Lieutenant-Colonel John Frederick Sales Clarke who was CO from 1841 to 1846 shows him with the Scottish pattern lace on his pouch-belt indicating that the sabretache also had this pattern.
