Mounted Infantry Sergeant 1903

The 2nd Battalion provided a mounted infantry company during the Boer War but this Sergeant Instructor of Signalling was photographed after the war. He wears the khaki uniform but with the green Broderick cap that was worn from 1902-04. It was distinguished by a red half moon on the front and the regimental metal badge. His Lee-Enfield rifle is kept in place by a strap around his body and a leather bucket attached to the saddle. As well as his rank chevrons and crossed-flags signallers badge, he has a curved cloth shoulder title with a 2 below. The Mounted Infantry were trained at a school set up in Aldershot but by 1913 it was closed down.
