The March to Afghanistan

This watercolour is by James Atkinson, the official Superintending Surgeon of the Army of the Indus. It comes from an album 'Sketches in Afghaunistan' and shows 'Sir John Keane and staff in the middle distance'. Presumably he is one of the figures wearing a pelisse and white peaked cap. The army is faintly visible snaking across the plain on the right. Sir John was an officer in the 13th from 1803 to 1811, joining them at Gibraltar in 1805. He was commanding officer of the 13th from 1809 to 1811 and then transferred to the 60th Regiment. He was born on 6 Feb 1781 and died on 24 Aug 1844.
