The Slave Rebellion 1791-1804

The French Revolution inspired a rebellion in Haiti, then the French colony of St Domingo. The French Revolutionary government granted citizenship to selected wealthy free black people but the local French colonists refused to support this legislation. Within two months there was a general revolt of blacks against the white plantation owners. On 22 Aug 1791 the slaves attacked the whites and burned plantations. This French print of 1833 depicts a scene of barbarity as a white family is shown no mercy by their former slaves.
